Champions Gambia will not participate in West Africa Deaf Football Championship

The West Africa Deaf Football Championship Champions Gambia will not be participating in the upcoming 11th West Africa Deaf Football Championship to be held in Ivory Coast on the 17th of August 2023.

The team will not be participating due to financial constraint after engaging stakeholders to step in for help and still not meeting their D2.8 million budget.

In a letter seen by Sporty Nation, the National Sports Council said “government took note of the importance of your participation in the Deaf Football Championship to be held this August in Ivory Coast. As a result, it explored means of funding your participation in the said competition. However, due to our financial situation, it cannot support this request.”

Expressing his disappointment, Lamin Ceesay President of the Gambia Deaf Sports Association said “it is very sad, discriminatory and prejudiced against people with disabilities in Sports development.”

The attention of the team has now shifted to the World Deaf Football Championship to be held in Malaysia starting on September 23 to October 7 2023.
