GAMBIA: GSSSA INTER-SCHOOL ATHLETICS CHAMPIONSHIPS FINALS SLATED FOR FRIDAY TO SUNDAY

The Gambia Senior Secondary School Association alias GSSSA in collaboration with the Gambia Teachers Union Cooperative Credit Union (GTUCCU) slates its upcoming athletics championship for Friday to Sunday at the Independence stadium in Bakau.

The athletics championship which brings more than 10 000 spectators and about 71 athletes of different schools and one of the highest national athletic championships is slated for 13th to 15th March, 2020.

Speaking at the unveiling of the stance of the GSSSA, Ousman K. Kebbeh, Vice President and the acting President of the GSSSA said they are fully prepared towards the upcoming championship as to the overtaking of the last competition.

‘We will want to use the International Amateur Athletic Federation alias IAAF standard rules in the competition as we want to make the competition look standard as it is where the national athletics team is selected and nurtured’, Ousman K. Kebbeh.

Perhaps Kebbeh meant to overcome the last competition by making the competition look standard as to the IAAF standard rules being applied during the competition.

Meanwhile, Alieu Y. Cham, head of competition of the GSSSA said they are ready to go by the rules governing the competition and they want to get rid of over staying in a particular level of schooling.

‘We are not saying do not go to school or repeat a particular class but you cannot over stay in our competition as each student get an extra bonus year and we are not here for anybody or any school but here for the competition’, Cham said.

Bansang Senior Secondary School with 31 qualifiers, back to back winners Bottrop Kindergarten Technical Senior Secondary School with 30 qualifiers, Nusrat Senior Secondary School with 24 qualifiers as two were disqualified during the qualifiers, contenders and former champions Gambia Senior Secondary School with 13 qualifiers, long time champions Saint Augustine’s Senior Secondary School with little to cheer as they are no longer part of the big guns of the competition.

The championship produce the Gambia’s finest and widely cheered Gina Bass on her glory days with Saint Joseph’s Senior Secondary School. The championship which began in the early 1970s is still kicking and producing Gambia’s finest athletes.
