By Fatou B. Camara

Michael Mendy, born and raised in Kunkujang Mariama in the Kombo South District of the West Coast Region, embarked on his footballing journey while pursuing his education. His dream has always been to become a professional footballer.

Starting football at a tender age, Michael faced numerous challenges but despite the obstacles, he persisted, aiming to make his family and community proud.

Inspired by his football idol Ronaldinho, former Brazilian professional player and one-time Ballon D’ Or winner, Michael began his career with Eagle Force in Kunkujang Mariama before transitioning to Young Boy Star and other local clubs.

His journey led him to play for Gambian club named after Spanish La Liga club Barcelona, winning trophies, and later for Tujereng and Nema Junior, where he clinched both league and knockout titles respectively.

Reflecting on his nickname, Michael explains; “I named myself after my idol (Ronaldinho) because I aspire to emulate him. Football has been my passion since childhood, and I always aimed to follow in his footsteps.”

From 2022 to 2023, Michael played for Sanyang Town Team in the West Coast Region. He has been proving his worth in both local and Senegalese leagues.

During his stint with Team Raza in Cassamance, Senegal, Michael’s defensive prowess helped his team reach the final, conceding only one goal throughout the Faś National tournament.

Returning to The Gambia, Michael re-joined Sanyang. He was a key pillar in their 2023 title success in the West Coast Zonal championship as they defeated Brikama in the finals.

Currently, Michael plays as a fullback for Esohna Academy, a third-division club in the West Coast Region, where he is yet to score a goal or make an assist but he is aiming to end his goal drought before the season concludes.

Looking ahead, Michael envisions himself playing at the professional level and representing his country on the international stage within the next two years.

Esohna Academy, Michael’s current team, has secured a spot in the West Coast third division semi-final and currently in the 2nd position on the table standings with 23 points fuelling his determination to propel them to promotion in the coming season.
